South Jersey Quaker Church Near Me

Cropwell is a Friends Meeting Quaker church community in Marlton-Cherry Hill, NJ. We’d love to have you visit us for worship any Sunday morning at 10 am.

Every Quaker Meeting has its own character and we invite anyone looking for a spiritual home to visit us as part of their search. At Cropwell we treasure our friendliness, our desire for a community grounded in the Holy Spirit, our in-person worship, and our genuine desire for new members to join us in this spiritual journey. We seek to love God, welcome our neighbors, and follow the Inward Christ.

We are a people-led church. We have no minister or priest. Around 10 a.m. on Sundays we settle together into expectant silence, attentive to what Friends call the Inward Christ. When prompted by the Holy Spirit, a worshiper will rise to give a few minutes of spontaneous ministry: they might read out of a book of Quaker writings or the Bible, share a personal struggle or spiritual insight, ask for prayers, or talk about a Quaker testimony or belief.

Quakers are a liberal progressive Christian religion. We seek that of God in everyone and to follow the Inner Light. Quakers testimonies are often called the SPICES—simplicity, peace, integrity, community, equality, and sustainability. We care about race and anti-racist reconciliation, climate change, pacifism. We are known for our history of anti-slavery and anti-war activism and our desire to speak truth to power. These values are all the outward expressions of changed hearts as we come to know God.

Local South Jersey Quakers

Cropwell is part of Haddonfield Quarter, a group of 9 Meetings (what we call our churches) in Burlington, Camden, and Atlantic Counties that meets four times a year. These “Quarterly Meetings” usually include worship, a presentation, and some business.

The three nearest Quarterly Meetings have come together as the SouthJerseyQuakers project. There’s lots of great information about upcoming events and they have a YouTube channel that includes past presentations about Friends in South Jersey.

Quakers in the greater Philadelphia area are joined together as Philadelphia Yearly Meeting and we follow its Quaker Faith and Practice as our guide.

National and International Quakers

There are many national and global Quaker organizations with which we engage. Friends General Conference (FGC Liberal Quakers) and Friends United Meeting (FUM Orthodox Quakers) serve as umbrella organization for Quakers in North America and Friends World Committee for Consultation unites the many different flavors of Friends throughout the world. The American Friends Service Committee is an activist organization, while Friends Committee on National Legislation is a lobbying group that helps Quakers have a voice in national political affairs. Friends Journal magazine news and articles on Quaker thought and their QuakerSpeak YouTube series is useful for newcomers wanting to know more about Friends.
